preternaturally is set in new york city, where the supernatural population has soared in the last few decades. we are trying to keep world lore fairly simple: supernatural beings are known to the human world, after being outed in the early 1900s after a secret government facility was broken into and decades of research was released to the public. relations between humans and the supernatural were fraught with tension, but in the last 50 years, they have reached tentative peace. supernatural beings are subject to governance by the elders, four mysterious figures who come from each of the largest supernatural factions and intervene in disputes when necessary. we are only allowing the following species at this time, but this may be subject to change in the future, should the community continue to grow. (you can play a human, if you want, but know that they might be a bit boring in comparison!) please note that we are not allowing characters who are actual historical figures (no anastasia romanovs, sorry) or characters who are based on folkloric figures (no baba yagas, either). bits have been taken from uniques & mystos. |

fairies, also called the fae or fair folk, are magical creatures that are native to the fae realm of elphyne, where they are broken into the seelie and unseelie courts. no species other than fairies can enter elphyne. both seelie and unseelie fae have enhanced speed and strength and accelerated healing. they also have wings that give them the ability to fly from place to place, should they choose, that they are able to hide at will. fairies do not divulge their true names, believing it gives someone power over them once they learn it.
fairies have the longest lifespans of supernatural beings, and live, on average, between 1,000-1,200 years. years of vanity has added up to fairies typically not looking older than their 50s regardless of their true age. |

werewolves (in our particular canon) are born, not made via bite or curse. it is believed that the first werewolf was created as the result of a curse from a jilted witch, but this has never been verified. they can shift into large wolves (wolves only, no werejaguars or werecougars etc) at any given moment, and while their shifting is not tied to the changing of the moon, they are at their strongest during full moons. while werewolf packs and clans do exist, it's just as likely for a werewolf to be unaffiliated.
werewolf lifespans range between 300-400, and while their aging is significantly slowed, they do age. |
witches, which is a gender neutral term, are born and not made. all witches are capable of bonding with familiars (any one animal they undergo the bonding ritual with that will then amplify their magic) and shimmering (an energy based form of teleporation where the user shimmers, distorting the space around them, within limits i.e. no witch can shimmer between continents or from one side of a country to the other), but beyond that, they have specialized factions. witches belong to one faction.
witches have the shortest lifespans and live, on average, for about 250-300 years. like werewolves, their aging is significantly slowed, but they do age. |

vampires, also spelled vampyr and vampyre, are undead beings that subsist on blood (human, mostly, but supernatural blood gives them a "high" that many vampires enjoy). they are made (also called sired) when a vampire bites a human and kills them with the "poison blood" in their bloodstream. vampires cannot turn other species (they simply become ill if bitten), only humans. contrary to some belief, they are not affected by sunlight except as newborns (freshly turned).
vampires (again, in our particular canon) are not immortal. they stop aging at the point in which they were turned, but once they begin to reach 1,000 years old (including the time they spent as a human), their bodies begin to decay and break down, eventually perishing. note that vampire slayers do exist, but are not a species we allow at this time. |
